Lumsdon is currently product affairs manager at Volkswagen, a job he has held since July 2011, according to his LinkedIn profile. In this role he handled press and public relations for the Volkswagen brand including Commercial Vehicles and Volkswagen Group UK, with a particular focus on the product itself.

He previously worked as a sub editor and editor on automotive titles at Haymarket Publishing, which is also the publisher of PRWeek. He describes himself on Twitter as a "motoring anorak my whole life".

Lumsdon's arrival coincides with the departure of PR manager Angus Fitton from Mercedes-Benz. He had held the role since 2012, and moves on to join another undisclosed carmaker.

According to a press release from Mercedes-Benz, its UK car sales have doubled in the past five years – it sold 74,000 cars in the first six months of 2015, the same amount as in 2010 as a whole.
