Mehta has spent the past ten years at the Foreign Office as chief press officer. Before this she worked at Downing Street. She has also held roles at the Department for Work and Pensions and Metropolitan Police.
In her new role Mehta will be responsible for expanding the work that Edelman does internationally for heads of state and government out of its UK office, as well as working closely with teams in the US, Middle East, Africa and Asia.
Gurpreet Brar, managing director for public affairs UK, Edelman, said: "Every year at Edelman we launch our Trust Barometer and year after year we have seen trust in governments declining. Challenges ranging from the Eurozone to the Wikileaks saga have time and again demonstrated that government reputation is fragile.
"Naheed's unparalleled understanding and experience of Government will be invaluable to clients and help drive the government communications offer."
