Ogilvy PR taps MSLGroup's Smith to lead NY brand marketing

NEW YORK: Ogilvy Public Relations has appointed former MSLGroup SVP Melissa Smith to serve as EVP and New York brand marketing practice director.

Smith, who has been in the role since January, reports to Dr. Jennifer Scott, New York MD at Ogilvy. She is tasked with handling the direction and growth of the practice, as well as managing accounts, financial performance, talent, and business development.

Prior to Smith, Brian Maloney, former MD of the US consumer marketing practice, led brand marketing in New York. Maloney left last May to launch his own agency named Cusp NYC.

The new role "combines so many different areas I’ve been successful in over my career, but have not been able to fulfill in one place," said Smith.

One of her main goals is to bring on a new anchor client for the practice, she added. Some of the firm’s current clients in the brand marketing sector include LG, American Express, and Ford.

No recruiter was involved in Smith’s hiring, confirmed Scott.

"Our search took a while last year – we wanted to get exactly the right person," explained Scott. "2015 for us is the year of growth, not just in terms of revenue but in terms of the type of impact we can make for clients [and] the kind of creativity we can bring to the discipline."

Before her time at MSLGroup, Smith served as EVP and head of RL Public Relations + Marketing/Sportivo’s New York office. Before that, she was a group VP at GCI Group in the consumer marketing practice.
