Brad Staples to succeed Margery Kraus as APCO Worldwide CEO

CEO and founder Margery Kraus will become executive chairman on January 5, and Evan Kraus will take on the role of president and MD of operations. Neal Cohen will be vice chairman of the board and president of global client strategy.

WASHINGTON: APCO Worldwide international president Brad Staples will become the firm’s chief executive on January 5, 2015, when current CEO and founder Margery Kraus assumes the role of executive chairman.

Staples will focus on continuing to globalize the firm and further integrating APCO’s services. He noted that a major task will be finding the next generation of future leaders for the firm.

"As a business, our purpose has been handling the complex comms assignments that our clients come to us for when they are looking to grapple with the place in which politics, business, and society intersect, and when they need that real insight and strong strategic understanding and creativity," said Staples. "As a firm, we will stay true to that core purpose, and that is my main priority as CEO."

Cohen and Margery Kraus will mentor APCO staffers, in addition to working with clients.

"As much as we want to drive continuity, we want to make sure we are keeping pace and staying ahead of trends," said Evan Kraus. "I aim to help APCO get ahead of the curve and remain there."

At that time, EVP Evan Kraus will step into the role of president and MD of operations at the firm as its current president and COO, Neal Cohen, becomes vice chairman of the board and president of global client strategy.

Staples will be London-based, while Evan Kraus and Cohen will continue to be located in Washington, DC.

The ownership structure of the firm will remain unchanged, with APCO staying a majority women-owned business.

"The reason we are doing this now is to make sure there is established continuity in the firm and people can look a decade down the road and see where the firm is going," said Margery Kraus. "I want to make sure APCO continues to have the stability and the excellence that it has had in the past by continuing to build our brand and get the kind of clients we want, to be much more externally focused, and secure the future."
