OMG: We Are Social tracks the Twitterati's favourite acronyms

While they are most often found laughing out loud, the Twitterati are also regularly confused head-shakers with a penchant for cursing, a new survey of social media acronyms has found.

The agency tracked all English language use of Twitter across the globe for a three-month period to compile a top 50 list of the most commonly used abbreviations of phrases.

Perhaps unsurprisingly LOL (Laugh Out Loud) was way out in front, with more than 263 million uses from April to June this year.

Although the hilarity continued into second place with LMAO (Laughing My Ass Off) being used nearly 68m times, ROFL (Roll On The Floor Laughing) was well down the list in 22nd place, with a somewhat overenthusiastic  combination of the two ROFLMAO coming 45th.

Regular users of the acronym OMG (Oh My God), meanwhile, will doubtless be shocked to discover the pithy exclamation has made it to third most regular acronyms.

Days of the week also got a look-in, with the trend of social media users posting old pictures of themselves for (TBT) Throwback Thursday making it into 11th place and trumping the considerably more lustful WCW (WomanCrush Wednesday) and MCM (ManCrush Monday).

While the list may be a case of TMI (Too Much Information) for some, others will be reassured that relative old-timer GTG (Got To Go) still has a place in social media parlance; it placed 39th with more than 191,000 uses.

Edward Kitchingman, research and insight director at We Are Social, said: "Abbreviations hold an undeniable appeal for social media users to communicate with one another with minimal effort and speed. Although sometimes controversial and considered ‘bad English’, it’s now pretty common to see abbreviations used in lieu of their full length counterparts.

"Language evolves with society and we can see here a natural progression of every-day phrases moulded to fit our needs. Like the language used in texts naturally developed in response to efficiency, so it has on social media."
