Aberdeen City Council embraces publicity over 'Newshite' blunder

Aberdeen City Council has welcomed the global publicity generated by a "somewhat amusing" error on the cover of its magazine for housing tenants, Newsbite.

Media outlets took notice after the placement of a woman’s head obscured part of the ‘b’ in the masthead, leading to a potentially somewhat different reading. 

However, the council’s media team manager Graham Lawther was not overly perturbed by the oversight in the publication, which was sent out to around 20,000 residents.

"We became aware of pretty high levels of social media activity regarding the front page after it was found to be amusing in some quarters," said Lawther, "and we found ourselves getting nationwide attention for a publication with a normally pretty tight circulation."

Having being widely shared on Twitter, the cover has since been picked up by titles such as The Independent and BuzzFeed, with Lawther quoted in the media as being "delighted" that so many people were now aware of the magazine. 

Lawther told PRWeek: "It seemed sensible to capitalise on the amount of attention it was getting and recognise we’d made a somewhat amusing error. 

"It is August after all, and the media are always on the lookout to take the mickey out of local government."

The online version has since been corrected, with the woman's head moved to a more fortunate position, he added.
