Luckily for the boaters, it was all part of a prank marking the launch of Shark Week on the Discovery Channel starting this Sunday (10 August).

The technical stunt was set up by special effects designer Jamie Campbell by using a polystyrene fin mounted on to a 3m tubular frame, with internal ballast and flotation devices.

To add to the scene, a rowing boat with a chunk taken out of it was placed on the island on the boating lake.

Rich Turner, Board Director at House PR said: "Tapping into people's fears and fascination with these magnificent creatures gave us the platform to create entertaining content and Fins-bury Park was the perfect setting for this light-hearted prank."
