Miguel Piedra: 40 Under 40 2012

VP, Global Communications and Culture, Burger King
37

Miguel Piedra boasts more than a decade of experience working for two of the most recognizable brand names in the world – The Walt Disney Company and Burger King.  Throughout his career, he has produced award-winning and groundbreaking campaigns, as well as being a valued adviser to CEOs and senior management teams.

In his current role for Burger King, Piedra is responsible for the strategic development and execution of all communications efforts for the company and its network of more than 12,500 restaurants in 80-plus countries. In his short time at Burger King he has made a huge impact, with achievements including leading internal and external communications for the acquisition of Burger King Holdings by 3G Capital. The move included a global staff reorganization and two significant reductions in workforce.

Piedra’s efforts included managing numerous national and international crises and issues, maintaining a positive/neutral media percentage of more than 85%, and protecting the reputation of the brand.

Previously, Piedra was part of the Walt Disney Parks and Resorts family in a range of leading roles, including publicity manager for the grand opening of the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, director for European press relations, VIP relations and events at Disneyland Paris, and developing and launching the Disney Parks News Bureau in Florida. Key achievements at Disney include developing the most successful cause-marketing campaign in Disney Parks’ history, which resulted in more than 1 million volunteers taking action in their local communities.

Piedra deserves to be counted among PRWeek’s 40 Under 40 "because of his drive, enthusiasm, and devotion to the company, employees, and his industry," says Tom Coyne, CEO of Coyne PR, Burger King’s US AOR.

"Miguel is a leader, a partner, a mentor, a strategist, a visionary, an innovator, and a problem solver," adds Coyne. "These qualities have led to his extraordinary success throughout his career and across the globe."
