With 4 million Twitter followers and 58 million Facebook fans, Discovery is right out there in terms of social media, thanks in no small measure to Catherine Frymark. As SVP for communications, she oversees communications strategy for all US business units of Discovery Communications, including Discovery Education, advertising sales, digital media, and commerce.
Frymark also leads the teams responsible for the company’s efforts to reach out via social media. In fact, one of the highlights of her 12-year career at the organization was the launch and development of Discovery’s centralized US social media practice. In 2010 and 2011, Frymark oversaw the hiring and development of a team of seven social media practitioners across brands including Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, and Science Channel. As a result, Discovery now has legions of Twitter followers and boasts the second largest Facebook footprint in all of cable TV with more than 58 million "likes."
Other key achievements include revamping communications for Discovery Education, a move that led to the company being recognized as the top provider of digital education resources for schools.
During her time at Discovery, Frymark has been at the forefront of numerous network launches, leading communications strategies for ventures including HD Theatre, cable TV’s first 24/7 high-definition network,Science Channel, and Military Channel. She also played a vital role in communications and press for the launch of joint venture OWN – the Oprah Winfrey Network.
Michelle Russo, SVP for corporate communications at Discovery, says Frymark is known throughout the company – and the industry as a whole – as a trusted adviser on "any and all issues."
"She embodies the definition of leadership– always willing to go that extra mile to make sure her team succeeds in each and every endeavor," Russo adds. "No job is ever too big or too small to tackle for Catherine. She always delivers top results with a positive attitude and the utmost professionalism."
