Citigroup taps Brunswick partner Lowney as corp comms head

Citigroup has hired Brunswick Group partner Jennifer Lowney as head of corporate communications, effective early September.

NEW YORK: Citigroup has hired Brunswick Group partner Jennifer Lowney as head of corporate communications, effective early September.

Lowney will oversee Citigroup’s global public affairs teams in the corporate sector, as well as in Japan and China. She is also tasked with serving as the company’s principal spokesperson, according to an internal memo sent to the company’s staff by global public affairs EVP Ed Skyler on Wednesday.

Lowney, who was listed on PRWeek’s 40 Under 40 in 2009, said she is reporting to Skyler and overseeing a team of seven. She declined to offer further information on her new role.

Citigroup representatives were not immediately available to comment.

She is joining Citigroup from Brunswick Group, where she has served as partner and has managed the New York office since 2004.

During her time at the agency, she provided support for Facebook and Visa’s respective IPOs, and helped companies through mergers and acquisitions, crises, and restructurings, according to her profile on Brunswick’s website.

A representative from Brunswick was not immediately available to comment on Lowney’s departure or replacement.

Before Brunswick, she served as VP for Hill & Knowlton Strategies for five years, according to her LinkedIn profile.

In addition to Lowney, Citigroup has appointed Mark Costiglio as head of financial communications. He will report to Lowney, according to Skyler’s internal email.

In April, Citigroup reportedly eliminated between 200 and 300 jobs in its global markets division, or about 2% of its workforce in that unit. Those affected include the younger brother of the financial institution’s former CEO, Charles Prince.
