LinkedIn hires comms exec Batty as marketing director for Talent Solutions

LinkedIn has brought on Ryan Batty, former senior director of global corporate communications at Polycom, to serve as director of marketing, global content, and channels for the social network's Talent Solutions business.

SAN FRANCISCO: LinkedIn has brought on Ryan Batty, former senior director of global corporate communications at Polycom, to serve as director of marketing, global content, and channels for the social network’s Talent Solutions business.

Batty started in the role on July 14 and reports to James Raybould, senior director of marketing for LinkedIn’s Talent Solutions business. He succeeds Leela Srinivasan, who left the role in May. Srinivasan joined OpenTable in June as VP of marketing.

Overseeing roughly nine staffers, Batty is responsible for looking at the content LinkedIn is generating and the channels the company is leveraging to help members find job opportunities through social media and digital marketing. He explained that his main focus is building greater emphasis on the importance of content marketing in LinkedIn’s Talent Solutions business.

"My team works closely with our counterparts on the communications team to establish the narratives and themes that help drive some of the news we report and content we develop together for our multiple audiences and stakeholders, through both owned and earned channels," Batty said.

Through its Talent Solutions business, whereby recruiters and corporations pay LinkedIn for premium features to connect with potential candidates, the main objective going forward is connecting talent to opportunity at scale, he explained.

"When you hear about unemployment today, part of the problem is there are tons of unfilled jobs out there because a lot of businesses and organizations have trouble connecting the right talent to the right opportunity; that is what LinkedIn is working hard to do," he said. "That could fundamentally change the economics of employment."

More broadly, LinkedIn is expanding how it can help companies, organizations, nonprofits, and others not just hire, but market themselves.

"I see LinkedIn sitting at the center of sales, marketing, and communications," Batty added.

He departed Polycom earlier this month. During his time there, he led a global team, and was tasked with managing Polycom’s reputation and building brand awareness, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Polycom is currently searching for Batty’s replacement, and Julie Basa, the company’s director of corporate communications, has taken over his responsibilities in the interim, he said.

A representative from Polycom was not immediately available to comment.

Prior to Polycom, he was the director of global marketing and communications for the healthcare practice at Accenture. Before that, he served as senior account manager of North American public sector sales for Oracle. He also served in various senior sales, comms, and marketing roles for Sun Microsystems, and previously worked at McData Corporation as international PR manager and Global Commerce Systems as corporate communications manager, according to his LinkedIn.

In the first quarter of 2014, LinkedIn posted revenues of $473 billion, up 46% from the same quarter the previous year. The biggest contributor to growth was LinkedIn’s Talent Solutions business, representing 58% of total revenue in Q1.
