HSBC names Rozman US communications lead

HSBC has appointed a new head of comms in the US.

NEW YORK: HSBC has appointed Douglas Rozman as US head of communications.

Rozman started in the role on July 21 and reports to global communications leader Pierre Goad, who is based in London.

Former HSBC corporate affairs EVP Lisa Sodeika, who left the company last December, previously led the comms function in North America, Rozman said. Diane Bergan, who covered those duties in the interim, will continue in her role as SVP and head of regulatory communications.

Rozman is responsible for communications counsel for the bank’s US organization, covering corporate issues as well as internal and external comms, he told PRWeek. He oversees between 15 and 20 staffers at the company.

Charles Naylor, co-head of global communications at HSBC, departed the company last month. The bank said it would not replace him, with Goad handling the role alone.

In June, HSBC appointed Patrick Burke to succeed Irene Dorner as CEO of its US unit, effective November 1. Rozman said he will be "heavily involved" in the transition.

"I will also be coordinating and providing global program support with our colleagues in London," Rozman explained. "I will also be building on the great work the team has been doing here by doing a strategic review of how HSBC USA stays synched up with our global comms program, looking at how we are structured, and looking at our agency resources."

The bank has relationships with WPP agencies and FTI Consulting, but it does not have a corporate PR agency of record, Rozman said, adding that this may change under his leadership.

"The comms function here is pretty self-sufficient, and we typically work with PR agencies on a project basis," he said. "I will be evaluating the needs here to see if we need a traditional agency relationship to provide support across the whole entity."

Rozman previously served as head of corporate communications at Pershing, where he was responsible for PR and internal comms. He left the role on June 30.

It is understood that Paul Patella, VP and head of PR at Pershing, will take over Rozman's responsibilities.

Patella declined to comment on Rozman’s departure, citing company policy.

Before Pershing, Rozman was founder and managing principal of Communivation Consulting. He also held roles at CIT, TD Waterhouse, DaimlerChrysler, MasterCard, Mercedes-Benz Credit Corporation, and Pitney Bowes.
