Five things for PR pros to know Wednesday morning

Apple reports $7 billion-plus quarterly profit but faces class-action lawsuit; Google considered acquiring Spotify last year, or not; LinkedIn buys Bizo; McDonald vows accountability at VA.

Apple is facing a class-action lawsuit from thousands of employees who say they were not given lunch or other breaks and did not receive final paychecks. The suit, filed in 2011, gained class-action status earlier this week. The technology giant’s second-quarter earnings, released on Tuesday afternoon, revealed that iPhone sales were up nearly 13% in the period, but iPad sales slipped for a second consecutive quarter. Apple earned $7.75 billion in profit and revenue was up 6%. Facebook will post its earnings on Wednesday.

Google kicked around buying music-streaming service Spotify late last year, but found its asking price too high, according to The Wall Street Journal. However, Re/code’s Kara Swisher says there were no significant talks between the two companies.

LinkedIn agreed to acquire Bizo on Tuesday for $175 million. Bizo, which helps b-to-b marketers keep track of and refine new leads, is the company’s second acquisition in as many weeks. Last week, LinkedIn bought news-tracking service Newsle, in a play that PR pros say could make the platform more attractive to b-to-b audiences.

Bob McDonald, the former Procter & Gamble CEO and President Barack Obama’s nominee to be the next Veterans Affairs secretary, promised on Tuesday to bring private-sector-style accountability to the role if he is approved by the Senate. McDonald received a warm welcome by members of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee before testifying yesterday.

Kevin McGrath, an executive at New York-based investor relations firm Cameron Associates, settled insider-trading charges brought by the Securities and Exchange Commission that he used information gained from writing press releases for trading. He will pay a $25,000 fine.
