The stunt, produced by experiential marketing agency PS Live for 20th Century Fox, was staged next to Tower Bridge.
PS Live had arranged with the Port of London Authority for two slots to attempt the stunt, at 5am and 6am, but the first was not suitable because of a lack of wind.
The stunt required special permission from the Port of London Authority, which was contacted six months ago, because any advertising or PR activity on the river or next to it is banned without special permission.
PS Live managing director Michael Brown said: "We estimated there was a 50/50 success rate, and we had two kites, but it does up the ante when the first one goes wrong."
The agency had permission to open Tower Bridge for the two attempts, and the two slots were early in the morning to avoid heavy river traffic, Brown said.
