Martin Currie, MD of the Manchester-headquartered agency, has hired the experienced editor and in-house PR man to join his seven-strong leadership team.
It is the first time Tooher, who will also form part of Citypress’ specialist crisis and issues management unit, has worked for a PR agency.
Tooher departed The Co-op earlier this month, following the appointment in March of Alice Hunt as director of communications.
He has worked in in-house PR since 2005, when he joined KPMG as senior media relations manager after a 16-year career in journalism including a business editor role at the Mail on Sunday.
He moved to become head of PR for The Co-operative Financial Services in 2010 and then to be corporate PR business lead at The Co-operative Group in January 2013.
Citypress’ financial services clients include the Post Office, which it won earlier this year, Lloyds Banking Group and the Wesleyan Bank.
Currie said: "Patrick is one of the market’s most experienced practitioners, combining board-level communications expertise with senior editorial insight."
