Virgin Galactic hands global PR duties to Edelman

Virgin Galactic has picked Edelman to handle its six-figure global PR account in the build-up to its first commercial flight into space.

The agency was selected after a nine-month search involving pitches in both the UK and US, with the brief covering everything from consumer and corporate messaging through to brand partnerships. It is understood that Virgin Galactic is still using Griffin Communications for some work though its nature is not clear.

Edelman will cover a global remit with a particular focus on the US, UK and Europe.

News of the appointment comes as the scheme, the brainchild of Richard Branson, targets launching its first shuttle into space within the next year.

Virgin Galactic commercial director Stephen Attenborough said: "We were impressed by the Edelman team’s insight and perspective on our pioneering project.

"They have strong creative credentials and strength in depth – as well as the global reach that our brand requires. We look forward to working with them and our other agencies in this pivotal year for our space programme."
 
Earlier this week Virgin Galactic named Land Rover as its first sponsor for the venture, which has been selling seats on the flights in advance for $250,000 each.
