Founders Fund names first in-house comms director

Venture capital firm Founders Fund has hired Erin Gleason as director of communications, its first in-house comms position.

SAN FRANCISCO: Venture capital firm Founders Fund has hired Erin Gleason as director of communications, its first in-house comms position.

Since joining on February 10, Gleason is supporting Founders Fund's portfolio of companies by advising them on marcomms strategy. Reporting to partner Lauren Gross, she is also responsible for maintaining the VC firm's brand and positioning.

Gleason said she will not manage any staffers, adding that she is “a one-woman show.”

Before creating the director of communications role, the firm worked with contractors overseen by Gross.

“[Founders Fund] lives and dies by its portfolio of companies, so I think they decided to bring comms in-house because they see the importance of being able to offer strategic guidance to those companies,” said Gleason. “This is a group of visionaries, passionate about investing in companies that are truly trying to change the world, and it is exciting to be a part of that.”

Gleason joined Founders Fund from The Hatch Agency, where she was an account supervisor. She was not replaced in the role, but she said Hatch is planning to hire several staffers.

Previously, Gleason was PR manager at Foursquare and served in several roles at Google between 2005 and 2010. She also worked as a deputy field organizer for President Barack Obama's 2008 campaign.

This story was updated on February 21 at 4 pm to change Lauren Gross' title to partner.
