NHS delays medical database roll-out to improve communications campaign

NHS England has delayed the start of the Care.data data sharing scheme by six months following calls for the communications campaign for the project to be improved.

Concerns have been raised by groups including the British Medical Association and the Royal College of GPs that the public has not been properly informed about the database of medical records, with reports that not everyone received leaflets sent out explaining it and giving the chance to opt out.

NHS England national director for patients and information Tim Kelsey said: "NHS England exists for patients and we are determined to listen to what they tell us. We have been told very clearly that patients need more time to learn about the benefits of sharing information and their right to object to their information being shared. That is why we are extending the public awareness campaign by an extra six months."
