The FBI has launched an initiative meant to both educate about and deter insider trading that features one of the silver screen's best known white collar criminals.

The effort includes a PSA featuring actor Michael Douglas, who solicits tips and information on securities fraud and insider trading. The agency hopes to capitalize on the pop-culture recognition of Douglas' Gordon Gekko character from the Wall Street films. A second video featuring a Walt Disney Co. secretary and her boyfriend attempting to sell quarterly earnings reports to two undercover FBI agents in New York was also released.

“One of the FBI's goals is to try to make the financial marketplace equal to all investors,'' William Carter, a public affairs specialist at the FBI, told PRWeek. He added that the number of insider trading cases has increased 52% since 2008.

To promote the PSA, the FBI held a press briefing that targeted reporters who have covered the federal agency or the financial industry in the past. The bureau's headquarters also encouraged its district offices to hold briefings. It has also promoted the video on YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook.
