NEW YORK: Makovsky + Company has promoted Tom Jones to SVP in its health practice. He was previously a group VP in the unit.

“He is very consistent with our culture of sparking new interest with current clients and enticing new clients with creativity that produces results,” said Gil Bashe, EVP and director of the health practice at Makovsky.

Prior to joining the firm, Jones was an industry consultant and principal at Calvin Communications and executive director of communications for Novartis Pharmaceuticals. He also worked as an MD at WCG and VP and group manager at Ketchum.

During his time at Novartis, he developed campaigns for products such as antifungal Lamisil. He also helped to create the brand's “Digger the Dermatophyte” mascot.

Jones joined Makovsky in 2011. The firm's health practice grew by 24% last year, compared with 2010, as it obtained work from three large global pharma companies. The unit has maintained a nearly 100% year-to-year client-retention rate, according to the agency.

In December, Makovsky hired Lee Davies as group VP in its health practice. He joined the firm from Merck & Co., where he was director of global media relations.
