HP's Gomez looks to add 'clarity' to marcomms

After becoming EVP and CCO of Hewlett-Packard seven months ago, Henry Gomez is focused on adding some “clarity” and “crispness” to its global PR AOR roster, which includes Burson-Marsteller, Porter Novelli, and Edelman, he said.

Gomez explained to me that the company is “in the process of both moving business and creating a ton of business.” While there was an agency review process in the works recently, it wasn't a review based on “winning or losing” — it was focused on “shifting around and creating new work for the firms,” he said.

“The agencies billings are all about the same,” Gomez said.

He added that the company's “core agencies of record” will help HP reach out to customers, investors, and the press in a way that is “clearer and faster than ever before.”

At the moment, Burson is handling enterprise business and software; Porter is working on marcomms and product publicity, including work on the PC and printer divisions; and Edelman is the lead agency on corporate communications functions, such as crisis, employee engagement, and government relations.

Gomez added that Edelman also works on some product publicity and some marcomms because the “overlap is tremendous.”
