WOONSOCKET, RI: CVS Caremark has hired Edelman for corporate PR support, following a review.
The scope of work includes strategic media and corporate reputation, it is understood. The pharmacy healthcare provider will attempt to position itself as a more serious destination for healthcare needs, rather than just a drug store and pharmacy.
The agency confirmed the account win on Thursday in a statement.
Several agencies pitched for the business, including Burson-Marsteller and Ogilvy Public Relations. Weber Shandwick, which handles PR for the company on a number of different fronts, including some corporate work, did not pitch for the account but continues to work with CVS.
CVS issued an RFP for corporate PR duties several months ago.
CVS Caremark's second-quarter profits rose to $966 million from $816 million the same time last year. Overall revenues during the period rose 16.3% to $30.71 billion. CVS owns more than 7,380 drugstores.
The business has evolved from CVS, a top drugstore chain, to CVS Caremark, a pharmacy healthcare provider with nearly $100 billion in annual revenues and 200,000-plus employees. CVS Caremark also has extensive philanthropic programs that offer free vaccinations, investments in disaster relief, and support for the disabled.
CVS representatives did not respond to requests for comment.
