Malala Yousafzai was named Communicator of the Year at the 2013 PRWeek Awards on Thursday night in New York City. Yousafzai, 15, is a Pakistani schoolgirl and activist who has become a global symbol of empowerment for her efforts on behalf of education and women's rights.
A native of the Swat Valley, where the Taliban had at times banned girls from attending school, Yousafzai in early 2009 penned a blog under a pseudonym for the BBC that chronicled her life under Taliban rule.
In October 2012, Taliban gunmen shot Yousafzai in the head as she was returning home on a school bus. She then rehabilitated at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, England.
