Diageo's top Western Europe marketer to depart

LONDON: Matthew Barwell, marketing and innovation director for Diageo's Western Europe division, will exit the company at the end of September.

LONDON: Matthew Barwell, marketing and innovation director for Diageo's Western Europe division, will exit the company at the end of September.

Barwell will step down from the role without a new job or other UK-based opportunities at Diageo available. He has opted to stay in the UK for family reasons.

The company will look for a replacement both internally and externally.

Reporting to Diageo CMO Andy Fennell, Barwell is responsible for brands including Guinness, Smirnoff, and Pimm's. He has worked at the company for 15 years.

Fennell credited Barwell with playing a key part in Diageo's success “in both developed and developing markets.”

Barwell's departure comes two years after a company restructure that resulted in him becoming consumer marketing and innovation director for the newly created Western Europe division. He was previously marketing and innovation director for Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Russia, and Turkey.

Diageo made the changes as an attempt to shift resources away from the low-growth region of Europe to faster-growing markets of Eastern Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Asia.
