Burson appoints Sexton as NY market leader

NEW YORK: Burson-Marsteller has appointed Alan Sexton, former EVP of communications at Global Strategy Group, to serve as its New York market leader, effective immediately.

NEW YORK: Burson-Marsteller has appointed Alan Sexton, former EVP of communications at Global Strategy Group, to serve as its New York market leader, effective immediately.

Sexton, who worked at Global Strategy Group since 2011, is reporting directly to Dave DenHerder, US CEO at Burson. He is also becoming a member of the agency's US leadership team.

“Alan is a friend and a real talent and we wish him the very best in his new role,” said Global Strategy Group CEO Jon Silvan in a statement. 

Prior to Sexton, Tony Telloni served as New York market leader at Burson. He left the firm in June to join GolinHarris as MD of the New York office.

In addition to leading Burson's New York office, which is the largest in the firm's global network with more than 200 staffers, Sexton will help drive new and organic business growth.

Sexton said a big area of focus is going to be “making sure that we continue to attract the caliber of talent that Burson has been known for for 60 years.”

He added that he was attracted to Burson because of the firm's talent, existing and potential clients, and the brand itself.

DenHerder added that the firm's clients expect Burson's staffers to be strategic counselors and Sexton's experience working with big brands fit perfectly. Sexton has worked for clients such as American Express, BP, Ford Motor, DHL, and LexisNexis.

Bringing on Sexton is also part of the agency's overall growth strategy to have the right leadership in place, added DenHerder.

Earlier this summer, Burson hired Thomas Gensemer, former managing partner and CEO at fellow WPP Group firm, Blue State Digital, to serve as its US chief strategy officer, based in New York.

In February, the agency appointed Michael Law, former Ogilvy & Mather West president, to serve in the newly created role of US president with a focus on building Burson's West Coast presence. Burson also brought on former Racepoint Group EVP and GM Bill Orr as EVP in San Francisco.

Before Global Strategy Group, Sexton served as EVP and director of public affairs at Ogilvy Public Relations. Sexton, who made PRWeek's “40 Under 40” list in 2010, was the youngest EVP in the firm's New York office at the time.

Sexton also previously worked at public affairs and lobbying firm, The Harbour Group, in Washington, DC, serving as a manager in the corporate communications department.
