Pfizer will offer 70 of its most widely prescribed drugs for free to US consumers who have lost health insurance through a new program called Maintain, starting July 1. The Pfizer Foundation will match donations from company employees who give to the program.

Says the Associated Press:
The move could earn Pfizer some goodwill in that debate after long being a target of critics of drug industry prices and sales practices. The program also likely will help keep those patients loyal to Pfizer brands.

What's interesting about this is whether or not other pharmaceutical companies will follow Pfizer's lead or if they will create their own assistance programs given the current economy and growing support for healthcare reform.
