Embattled S.C. governor's comms director leaves for private sector

COLUMBIA, SC: Joel Sawyer, communications director for embattled South Carolina governor Mark Sanford, will leave his position on August 5 to pursue private sector opportunities.

COLUMBIA, SC: Joel Sawyer, communications director for embattled South Carolina governor Mark Sanford, will leave his position on August 5 to pursue private sector opportunities. Ben Fox, Sanford's cabinet director, will succeed Sawyer as communications director.

Sawyer, who served as Sanford's chief spokesperson when the governor went missing and then admitted an extramarital affair last month, said in a statement that his decision was “purely about what's best for me and my family on a personal and financial level.”
