Venture capitalist John Thornton and Texas Monthly editor Evan Smith are launching a political news Web site for Texas, possibly as early as November.

Thornton, general partner of Austin Ventures, told The New York Times that he plans to raise $4 million over the next four months for the nonprofit site, to be called Texas Tribune. Smith told the newspaper that with many journalists out of work, “Talent ain’t the issue,” and added that the state has the lowest voter turnout in the country.

While the Tribune’s site doesn't have editorial content yet, it does have a Twitter account to provide updates about the launch. Smith disclosed last week that he was leaving Texas Monthly.
