PROVIDENCE, RI: The Providence Tourism Council issued an RFP in late August upon the expiration of its contract with New York-based Lou Hammond & Associates, its firm of about five years. Terms include a three-year contract with the possibility for renewal and $240,000 in PR services for the fiscal year.

The organization specifically invited the incumbent, along with a dozen other agencies in Rhode Island and throughout the US, to pitch for the business; it is also looking for pitches from any national agency with expertise in destination marketing and travel and tourism PR.

The RFP notes: "PTC is looking for a firm (“PR firm”) to utilize public relations tactics to secure earned media in appropriate national and regional print, broadcast, and interactive outlets for the City of Providence as a tourist, convention and meetings destination."

Jack McConnell, chair of the Providence Tourism Council, explained that the organization is also encouraging women- and minority-owned businesses to apply.

"It's good for the pool of talent we'd like to see," he said.

Incumbent Lou Hammond & Associates could not immediately be reached for comment.

The RFP also notes that a firm must be able to provide crisis communications as necessary, but McConnell said, "We don't anticipate having to use the service."

Materials are due September 30.
