Health officials are investigating Humana's use of mailings that "warned" Medicare customers about the potential changes in their health plans following healthcare reform and encouraged them to contact their lawmakers.

The investigation is specifically looking at whether the health insurer violated marketing rules with the letters and with an online program that automatically drafts letters to be sent to policymakers. The insurance industry, its trade group, and some Republicans are calling the investigation "political interference."

The investigation came at the request of Senator Max Baucus, the Senate Finance Committee chairman.

Humana has said it stopped the mailer and is cooperating with the investigation.
