A study released by the American Heart Association says that nearly half of American women don't know that heart disease is the number one cause of death for women.

The study is part of the association's ongoing "Go Red for Women" campaign. February is also Heart Awareness month. Experts believe that organizations need to find more ways to get out messages that resonate, either through peer-to-peer storytelling or social networking.

The study also found that awareness about heart disease has risen among women since 1997 yet, despite the number of public awareness campaigns that have addressed heart disease, awareness of the signs of a heart attack has not increased.
