Feld pulls communications in-house

The company produces Ringling Bros., the Barnum & Bailey Circus, and Disney on Ice.

Stephen Payne, VP of corporate communications for Feld, said communications will be handled by the company's 15-person internal team. He said that the decision was not made because of financial concerns.

“We have a talented group of individuals on our team in-house,” said Payne.

Feld had issued an RFP for a national AOR in April after working with Hill & Knowlton for five years. Payne told PRWeek then that company planned to pull public affairs and issues management, which had been handled by Hill & Knowlton, in-house.

The RFP had an annual budget of $360,000 and cited a need for a strong media relations capability.

Payne said that while no firms were invited to pitch, the review had narrowed down a field of finalists before it was cancelled. He added that Feld may tap into that group of firms to handle project work for the company in the future and would not issue another RFP.

The RFP was called out by PETA, which placed an ad in PR News, and issued an open letter to PR professionals, telling them to "think again" about taking work with the company. Payne said that PETA had no influence on the review or the firms who responded.
