WASHINGTON: SKDKnickerbocker hired Alex Slater to expand the firm's corporate communications practice, following the April merger of Squier Knapp Dunn Communications and Knickerbocker Consulting.

The firm hired Slater, former MD of public affairs at The Glover Park Group, to lead the practice, effective June 28. The Glover Park Group said it does not have plans to name a replacement for Slater.

Both Squire Knapp Dunn Communications, which was co-founded by former White House communications director Anita Dunn, and Knickerbocker Consulting are known for political communications.

“We've always had a strength in messaging and communications," said Josh Isay, managing partner for SKDK, later adding that the firm is "uniquely positioned right now."

Dunn, who stepped down from the White House in November 2009, is still working with the Obama Administration, including on the communications effort to implement healthcare legislation.

The expanded practice will provide counsel for corporate clients on political, legal, regulatory, and legislative issues, said Slater, whose title is MD. He said the practice currently has less than 10 staff members, although the firm has plans to hire additional staff.
