On Tuesday, Netflix and Relativity Media announced a long-term partnership in the distribution of major motion pictures in the US.

Under the agreement, popular contemporary movies shown previously on pay channels—such as HBO, Showtime, and Starz—will be available from Netflix months after their release on DVD, ending the multi-year exclusivity contract pay channels usually require.

The partnership between Netflix and Relativity is the first time studio-quality feature films will be streamed via Netflix subscription, rather than traditional pay channels, Reuters reported.

Relativity Media has financed, co-financed, or produced more than 200 feature films, generating over $13 billion in box office revenue.
