SEATTLE: Sports gear and apparel company REI has begun an informal search for a PR agency to support its expansion plans in the tri-state area.

The company plans to add to its 114 stores by opening four new shops in the area next year, said Libby Catalinich, director of corporate communications at REI. Locations will include Manhattan; Yonkers, NY; Carle Place, NY; and Paramus, NJ.

Catalinich told PRWeek: “We started some conversations and expressed interest about learning more about the capacities of PR firms, but that's as far as it's gone. There has not been a formal RFP process, yet."

The company currently works with PR agencies in various regions, including Turner PR, which has offices in New York and Denver. The agency declined to comment for the story.

Each new location will house a bike shop for quick assemblies and repairs, a seasonal gear rental department, and a community space for REI and its local partners to hold outdoor classes, presentations, and events. The company also recently announced plans to open a store in Woodbridge, VA in the spring of 2012.

Catalinich would not discuss which agencies "may or may not be invited to provide additional information" to the company.
