PICnet and Soapbox created “snowmageddon” websites for New York and Boston for local residents to view and report blocked streets, stuck cars, and even organize a cleanup party.

Newark, NJ Mayor Cory Booker made headlines with his use of Twitter to reach out and help residents. He asked residents to direct message him their phone numbers if they were stuck and needed assistance. During the clean up he's also been Tweeting updates.

Geolocation and mobile apps that can demonstrate an ability to open communications during disasters and a crisis could gain an extra edge in an increasingly competitive environment.
