Media outlets are reporting that Jay Carney, Joe Biden's communications director, has been named White House press secretary.

Carney will replace Robert Gibbs, who said earlier this month that he would step down in February and become an adviser to President Barack Obama's re-election campaign. Carney, a former Washington bureau chief for Time magazine, had joined the Obama Administration as a director of communications for Biden.

The White House is expected to announce Carney's appointment this week, as well as the promotions of Alyssa Mastromonaco and Nancy-Ann DeParle to deputy chiefs of staff.
