SAN FRANCISCO: Yammer, the enterprise social networking and business internal communications startup, hired Ogilvy PR as its AOR for media relations.
Around six months ago Yammer chose Horn Group after issuing an RFP for the work, but a conflict of interest arose so Yammer did an about-turn and hired Ogilvy for the job, said VP of communications Dee Anna McPherson.
Ogilvy pitched Yammer when the RFP was issued originally. Horn Group confirmed it previously worked with Yammer up to around the end of the year, but declined to identify the client that sparked the conflict of interest.
Terms of the job also include social media counsel, said McPherson. Yammer doesn't work with any other PR agencies.
Strong market interest in enterprise social networking, which is essentially internal messaging and social media for companies, spurred the need for agency support, said McPherson. Previously, all communications at Yammer was handled in-house.
“It's a pretty hot space,” she said. “There's a lot of interest in what we are doing."
Over 90,000 companies now use the platform provided by the San Francisco-based startup, which launched in 2008 and doubled its employee count in the last six months. To date, Yammer has raised about $40 million.
McPherson said Ogilvy's integrated structure, with the ability to tap other experts throughout the firm, appealed to her. Three people will work the account, headed by Ogilvy VP Shelley Risk out of the agency's San Francisco office.
