USA Today creates hyperlocal news outlets

Sports PR practitioners in Chicago and Philadelphia will have a new outlet to pitch stories, as USA Today announced its intention to include additional coverage for those cities in its regular pages.

Sports PR practitioners in Chicago and Philadelphia will have a new outlet to pitch stories, as USA Today announced its intention to include additional coverage for those cities in its regular pages.

Called Chicago Extra and Philly Extra, the 8-page supplement will provide additional sports coverage for the cities' baseball and football teams. From the release:

Each Extra will focus on local content and fan engagement, with columns, player interviews, quizzes for fans, the latest buzz on sports talk radio and team analysis. Chicago Extra will cover the Cubs, White Sox and Bears. Philly Extra will cover the Phillies and Eagles.

The new ventures should provide opportunities for stories with a more local angle, as opposed to the big national stories that appeal to USA Today readers from coast to coast.
