What's new: As business grows and globalization becomes key, Shire has ramped up its communications operations.

Within the last 18 months, Shire, a global biopharmaceutical company, has nearly doubled the size of its corporate communications team.

Jessica Mann, SVP of global corporate communications, explains that the increases resulted from the company recently folding government relations into corporate communications, which she heads up.

"The rationale is really the global and geographic expansion of Shire, but also the growth of the business and the company moving into new therapy areas," she notes. "We want to ensure we're fully supporting the business' overall communications needs."

Last fall, Shire opened a new European hub, outside of Geneva, Switzerland, and also acquired a GI (gastrointestinal) business in Turnhout, Belgium. The company has a US headquarters in Wayne, PA.

Shire is also looking to invest more in digital communications, Mann adds.

The team is currently working on the first annual Brave Awards, which honors non-professional caregivers.
