Washington University gets new public affairs chancellor

ST. LOUIS: Jill Friedman has been named vice chancellor for public affairs at Washington University, effective January 1, 2012.

Friedman was most recently SVP and partner in Fleishman-Hillard's public affairs practice at the firm's St. Louis headquarters. She also previously served in a number of positions for former Missouri Gov. Mel Carnahan, including deputy chief of staff, director of policy development, and director of the Washington office.

Friedman will be responsible for Washington University's overall public relations, communications, and marketing efforts. She will lead a professional staff responsible for media relations, publications, the university website, and social media, among other areas.

She succeeds Fredric Volkmann, who retired September 30 after leading the school's public affairs office for 31 years.
