WASHINGTON: Ogilvy PR Worldwide is supporting Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, the US State Department, and a group of universities that are conducting the Women in Public Service Project.
The initiative launched at a Thursday event in Washington with speeches from Clinton, head of the International Monetary Fund Christine Lagarde, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, and other dignitaries. The goal of the effort is to increase the number of women in local, national, and international public service positions.
“Our initial goal is to put the challenges of women in public service on the map to raise awareness that this is an important issue,” said Kate Cronin, MD of Ogilvy New York.
Ogilvy New York is managing media strategy for the event, pitching key press outlets such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, and USAToday, said Cronin. The firm has also developed messaging for the event and engaged broadcast networks and bloggers.
Ogilvy is also using Twitter to spread the word about the initiative. Cronin and other members of Ogilvy's team tweeted from the event, for which the agency created the #WPSP hashtag to help consumers follow the day's activities.
The Wednesday event also included working group sessions where participants brainstormed about the challenges that may arise from the initiative, said Cronin, who is running the public awareness campaign.
The event is part of a long-term project between the State Department and the “Seven Sisters Colleges,” which include Barnard, Bryn Mawr, Mount Holyoke, Smith, and Wellesley colleges. Ogilvy will continue to support the initiative through the next year, said Cronin.
“The purpose of today is to really bring this to life,” she said. “It's a launching pad for the future of this initiative.”
