PASADENA, CA: Robert O'Rourke, the former head of communications at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) for 23 years, passed away Tuesday at 72 years old.

O'Rourke, who led Caltech's communications department from 1986 to 2009 as PR director and then VP of PR, was diagnosed with the lung disease pulmonary fibrosis in 2006.

Using his media knowledge, O'Rourke, better known as "Bob," spent the last few years of his life raising awareness for pulmonary fibrosis, which included an appearance on The Today Show. In 2009, O'Rourke ended his PR role for Caltech, but still served as senior adviser on external affairs to Jean Lou Chameau, president of the California school.
