Podtrac reports podcast listener demographics shifting

WASHINGTON: Podtrac, a podcast advertising and research firm, released a survey last week that suggests most podcast listeners are men, but that may be changing fast.

WASHINGTON: Podtrac, a podcast advertising and research firm, released a survey last week that suggests most podcast listeners are men, but that may be changing fast.

According to the survey, commissioned by Podtrac and conducted by Taylor Nelson Sofres (TNS), 78% of those who have ever listened to a podcast are male, but of those who have ever listened to a podcast, women are just as likely as men to have listened during the week before Christmas (51% of women versus 39% men). 

The firm queried over 22,000 podcast listeners in the fourth quarter last year, according to Mark McCrery, Podtrac founder and CEO. 

"It's very much like the early days of the web, when early adopters were mostly men," he said. "One question looked at how recently one listened to a podcast, and females were just as likely to have listened to podcast in the last week as males."
