EDS hires Fleishman to tell corporate story

PLANO, TX: As Electronic Data Systems (EDS) focuses on telling its corporate and business story after a rough couple of years, the $20.6 billion IT services and outsourcing company has hired Fleishman-Hillard as its corporate media relations agency.

Jeff Baum, VP of external relations for EDS, described the account as "modest" and said Fleishman will help the in-house team with its ongoing outreach to "top-tier business media."

For now, SVP Sean Healy will be the only agency person on the account, although Baum said the account could grow to accommodate a team. One reason EDS tapped Fleishman was because of Healy, who worked at EDS as director of corporate public relations, before joining Fleishman in late 2004.

"We wanted to work with an agency that had good contacts with New York-based business media that we could leverage," said Baum.

Healy will help raise visibility of EDS' corporate story and ongoing transformation among national media beyond the technology beat.

In recent years, EDS has been buffeted by Securities and Exchange Commission investigations, management churn, and the tech industry recession.

But as the company and the industry regain their footing, EDS is focused on telling its story to all of the company's stakeholders.

Last summer, as EDS launched its corporate initiative, VP of global communications Tom Mattia said the effort would help bring the company back to its storytelling roots.

"We had some great [communications] initiatives, but they weren't really tying everything together," said Mattia in July.
