WASHINGTON: Top Food and Drug Administration communications officer Sheila Dearybury Walcoff has taken a position on the senior staff of the Department of Health and Human Services.

The move creates a vacancy at the FDA, according to a press officer there.

Walcoff, who was a practicing attorney before joining the FDA, stepped into the role of associate commissioner for external relations in September 2004.

She reported directly to the commissioner and oversaw the agency's interactions with various external stakeholders in industry, patient advocacy groups, the media, and professional organizations.

At HHS, she will take on the role of counselor for science and public health, and will serve as a senior advisor to Secretary Mike Leavitt.
