Maurice Clarett, the former Ohio State football star whose own image has taken a blow for headlining more crime stories than sports stories, seems to have struck a nerve in his hometown.

Youngstown, OH Mayor Jay Williams, felt the need to defend the city’s image after Clarett’s lawyer, Michael Hoague, explained that Clarett was sporting a bulletproof vest at the time of his arrest on charges of carrying a concealed weapon because “it’s a way of life with the people he grew up with,” according to the AP.

"If truth be told, Mr. Hoague, while traveling the neighborhoods of Youngstown (which, unlike you, I do on a daily basis), I cannot remember the last time I've seen anyone wearing a tank top with a flak vest," Williams wrote in a letter to the lawyer.

I understand Williams’ feeling the need to defend the city, but in doing so, he inadvertently drew attention to negative perceptions of Youngstown.
