The pressures that traditional print media companies face have never been more evident than in the past year. The past few months alone have seen a number of print titles shuttered, with companies turning their attention and resources to their Web properties. Not surprisingly, the decline of the print business is still affecting staffing issues. This week, AdAge reports that Hachette Filipacchi and Time Inc. are instituting hiring freezes so they can meet their bottom line.
While this doesn't necessarily mean yet another round of layoffs, it is a sure sign that these traditional, print-heavy media powerhouses will need to shift focus even more. If the Web is the only way to save traditional publishing, then these companies should be concentrating on increasing revenue from that source, so they are able to hire the staff necessary to make them worth a read.
