ExxonMobil, the energy giant criticized over the years by environmental activists for funding “think tanks” such as the Competitive Enterprise Institute that produce research questioning the extent and causes of global warming, recently held a conference call with a number of environmental bloggers.

As a contributor to The Oil Drum writes, ExxonMobil public affairs representatives now stress that the company acknowledges the existence of climate change, though they still resist support of specific policy proposals to address it. This particular blogger, Stuart Staniford, doesn’t cut the company any slack for what he sees as past misdeeds, but does seem to have some sympathy for Ken Cohen, ExxonMobil’s VP of public affairs, who has the difficult job of trying to fix or at least mitigate ExxonMobil’s “bad guy” image among environmentalists.

For ExxonMobil, any kind words from enviro activists probably seem like a promising beginning.
