TORONTO: Tech firm Nortel Networks' North American business is up for grabs as part of a global review of its PR agencies.

Woburn, MA-based Lois Paul & Partners, a subsidiary of Omnicom's Fleishman-Hillard, currently holds the NA account and will defend, said Jay Barta, Nortel manager of corporate communications. Lois Paul could not immediately be reached for comment.

PRWeek UK first reported the review on January 31. Ben Roome, Nortel EMEA corporate communications manager, told PRWeek UK that the company was considering “pooling resources into one global supplier for PR” or signing up regional agencies from one specific holding company.

Barta characterized the review as a standard procedure.

“As part of our core business process, Nortel systematically reviews the marketing vendors we use on a regular basis,” he said, via email. “As such, we are engaging in a review of our global PR requirements and agency support.”

The value of Nortel's global PR business is estimated at $2 million. Nortel does business in 150 countries.

Other Nortel agencies of record are Pleon In Europe, Porter Novelli In Central America and Latin America, and a mix of regional firms in Asia. All incumbents are re-pitching to keep the business, Barta said.
